In the “old days”, fishermen referred to the white albacore tuna as “chicken of the sea”. It was called this because the white color and very mild flavor reminded them of chicken. The founder of the company thought this would be a unique name for a brand of tuna, and the Chicken of the Sea brand is now known worldwide.

“Chicken of the Sea”, is a worldwide phenomenon today.
When I was first in Japan at a convenience store, I noticed that one of the onigiri (stuffed rice ball wrapped in nori) had the katakana label ????? ???? on it. It took me a while, but I realized that spelled “sea chicken mayonnaise” in the phonetic katakana alphabet. The onigiri’s stuffing was tuna salad, and it’s a tasty snack).
