Defragmenting an iPod
Neil’s World – Defragging your iPod. Well, the whole iPod seems shrouded in mystery is actually just a FAT32 file system with some magic directories. If you plug the iPod into a PC, it comes up as a hard drive. iTunes also comes up, but you can actually see the drive. They don’t let you…

Deaggregation of storage
a little ludwig goes a long way: The Exploding PC?. Another smart post by John. He’s right that you want to take the long term storage bank out of the PC. It happened with LANs long ago with SANs and NASes. I’ve been trying to get this to work reliably in my own house for…

VOIP at home
a little ludwig goes a long way: Going all voip at home. John has a great list of SIP and other products. The open source PBX is cool. In terms of cheap the existing analog phone sets, that is what these media gateways do. They normally have 2-4 analog ports that convert into SIP on…

MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum
t-break – MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum. Good review of a nForce4 board. This one is not SLI but it has about the same performance as the others. Doesn’t seem to be much difference in performance between different nVidia nForce4 boards, so main difference is SLI to put two graphics cards in. The “SLI”:http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=241159 version is…

Ephpod and Xpod
iPodlounge | All Things iPod | Ephpod. For me itunes is a mixed blessing. I actually like Musicmatch better because it has all the smart tagging and I use Exact Audio Copy for CD ripping. Its a nerd thing, but I love them. And, I really don’t like the way that if you make one…

New life for old iPods
iPodlounge | All Things iPod | NuPower Battery. iPods are so expensive I’ve been thinking about getting a 2G from eBay. The problem is that battery life is a big issue and Apple charges $99 to get a new battery. A great solution is a third party batter the NuPower Super High Capacity by Newer…

Symbian Virus
Zedge: Symbian Virus called Skull. Very scary, there is a file call Extended Theme Manager by Tee-222 that has this virus. You have to have a third party file manager installed to get rid of it. Sorry state of Audio Players
Tom’s Hardware Guide Mobile Devices: Is There Any Flash Left In Audio Players? – Introduction shows why Apple is going to completely kick butt when they announce their flash-based players in January. It is amazing to me how poor the designs are of the current flash products. Tom’s Hardware struggles to say good things, but…

Notebook Hard Disks
Now that you can just take a notebook hard drive out and replace it, there’s a growing market for increasing disk space. This really matters for notebook performance. First, going to 7200 RPM essentially doubles performance compared with 4200 RPM (although power consumption goes up). Also, most drives are 20-40GB in current notebooks. Going to…

ASUS WL-HDD2.5
TomsNetworking Tom’s Hardware WL-HDD2.5 review. Well I’ve struggled with the Linksys NSLU2. In talking with a buddy, the problem is that it won’t work with just any enclosure, the new Maxstor II enclosure works perfectly though, so don’t use a cheesy one, it is very sensitive to the USB2.0 interface since it pushes it so…

Blackberry reinstall gotcha
Support – Protocol Error: Data Transfer Aborted. Arrgh, the one error you get when you reinstall is that two DLLS don’t get registered by the install program, so you get this error. Connie’s 7230 finally gave up the ghost. Naturally two years later, so it is out of warranty, so time to buy a new phone. Naturally, T-Mobile makes it hard to do this and stay with T-Mobile. Both Cingular and AT&T Wireless are smarter. At the end of your commitment period, you get the same deal…
