WordPress not displaying Chinese correctly
I thought it was Scribefire, but it looks like “WordPress”:http://wordpress.org/support/topic/124544 has a configuration problem in displaying Chinese correctly. Apparently, with “Fantastico”:http://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress_Extended#Special_note_for_Fantastico_Upgrades there are two lines int he wp-config.php file for DB_CHARSET and DB_COLLATE that have to be removed. This seems to apply to WordPress 2.2 but my new WordPress 2.5 had this problem as well,…

Kerio vs. Exchange for Entourage, Mac OS X, iPhone and Blackberry
Well we’ve narrowed down choices to two choices, two hosters against one of three desktop and two mobile clients. Here are the parameters: Support for either of, in order: * Mac OS X application. That is Mail, iCal and Address Book that are native to OS X and which is fast. * Entourage 2004 or…

Google Apps
We’ve been trying to figure out the right way to do email and synchronize Calendars. Maybe Google is the right way to do it on the backend? The candidates are: * Exchange. This is trusty and reliable. The main issue is do we have to run our own Exchange and Blackberry Servers or do the…

Rosewill RC-605 problems
I got this Rosewill eSATA so I could plug fast drives into my MacBook Pro. Well, like lots of third party stuff it doesn’t really work. It is faster though, but you can only plug one drive in. At least for me. There are lots of issues with the driver apparently as Silicon Image is…

Home by Bus
Hey Seattle has this really cool application “Tripplanner.metrokc.com”:http://tripplanner.metrokc.com, you just type in any two street addresses adn it tells you what the best way. Takes into account when you leave so you’ll catch the bus right. Cool! I tried this and it really does work. Got home in 30 minutes including a short walk.

Seattle Best Restaurants
Every since the Seattle Weekly stopped doing their best restaurants and just has an unsorted “listing”:ttp://www.seattleweekly.com/listings/dining/, the new “Seattle Magazine”:http://seattlemag.com/ME2/Audiences/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=Publishing&mod=Publications%3A%3AArticle&mid=3E1DA341B2834604B64A1EB3BA74CCFB&tier=4&id=8F2C7CC3E6DA41C6BE7DD9FB6EAC669B has been filling the void. Main issue is that they don’t publish everything on the web. Really sad since they don’t get web advertising yet obviously in the 21st century! Or community reviews at “diningguide.com”:http://seattle.diningguide.com/dl1dt.htm…

Rich T the Science Guy
Well, love learning new things and there is nothing like learning about genes and things: * “GLP Tox”:google. This is short form for “Good Laboratory Practice”:http://www.fda.gov/ora/compliance_ref/bimo/glp/qna.htm that the FDA has where you basically study if sometime is toxic iin animal models * “Signal Peptide”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_peptide is a short sequence that moves a protein into the right…

MacBook Pro disk speed comparison
So an interesting test with “XBench”:http://www.xbench.com/ on disk speed. Since I’m using an older MacBook circa early 2007 for video processing, its interesting to compare the drives all of these are with 4KB blocks | | Score | Sequential Write | Sequential Read | Random Write | Random Read | | Internal 5400rpm Fujitsu MHW2160BHPL…

Windows XP Product Activation Key
Ok, I’m trapped away from my Windows XP CD, what do I do? # If you want to know the current Product Activation Key, you can download the Magical Bean Key Finder (current version 2.01). As “Mike Devlin”:http://www.mike-devlin.com/windows/key.htm points out there are a couple of key viewers pre-SP2 and post SP2. # If you want…

MacBook Air and Belkin 4-port Travel USB Hub
Well, the MacBook Air has a single USB port and I thought this wouldn’t be too much of a problem because I’d just buy a 4-port travel hub. Little did I realize how often the MacBook Air requires that you plug in directly otherwise things don’t work. So beware, here are the things I’ve found…

Syslogd runaway
On my Macbook, suddenly syslogd is running away. Seems like http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071030233438149 suggests that this is because of Tie Machine, even though I have it switched off. You can go and kill it with /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor and hopefully the new instance won’t go crazy. In my case, I did this and the new syslogd is still…

Rewriting the Anagram program
As Calvin pointed out, its a pain to do the string length and other calculations, so I went back and rewrote the anagram calculation using the prime number trick. That is, assign a prime to each letter from ‘a’ to ‘z’, then you can easily tell if two words are anagrams by multiplying all the…

Anagram Solver
Calvin wants to solve anagrams. There are lots of great programs out there, but not much source. “Gtoal.com”:http://www.gtoal.com/wordgames/anagrams.html has a good list of source code that is out there, but its hard to find a simple program. “Gtanag.mai”:http://www.gtoal.com/wordgames/anagrams/gtanag.mai is perhaps the simplest program that is a C program. I’m sure you could use it in…

Rainy Maui
What to do on a “rainy”:http://www.hawaiiweathertoday.com/?page_id=20 day in Maui, well thank goodness for the Internet: “Hawaii Show Time”:http://www.hawaiishowtime.com/Movies/index.asp?Isle=2. 10,000 BC looks good as does Nim’s Island. 1:30 and 1:45 shows or Horton hears a Who at 3:45, but the wind is picking up and “Beaufort scale”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beaufort_scale#The_modern_scale is 4-5. Snorkeling is lousy with the rain.

WordPress Automatic Upgrade
Wow, this http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-automatic-upgrade/ is just so cool. Upgrades WordPress automatically. I had 2.3 and wanted to get to 2.5 and it just did it! It also upgrades automatically the plug ins that I have. WordPress does use lots and lots of plugins so this is really convenient. Should really be a part of WordPress IMHO

Twitter is cool…
I don’t quite get where you are, but “http://twitter.com/richtong”:http://twitter.com/richtong is something I’ve started to use. It is great for two things, in case someone really wants to know where you are and doesn’t want to call I guess, but the really great thing is that with twitter IM and twitter texting, I can send URLs…

Fotki vs. Zenphoto vs. Nextgen Gallery
I’ve been trying to figure out for quite a while what the best photo gallery is. Started with Picasa and some of the other ones, but they don’t allow original photos to be uploaded and have size limits. Last year, found “fotki.com”:http://fotki.com which is $30 per year and allows unlimited storage and also has password…

Canon Rebel XT 350D will not sync with MacBook
I’ve had lots of problems with getting my Canon Rebel to work with my MacBook Air. First, the Compact Flash reader that I have works fine with Windows, but it was a cheap one from Targus and just refused to work with the MacBook Air. Then, after installing Canon’s software (why can’t the camera just…

Time Machine as a Windows file server
Well, if you buy a Time Capsule, it works easily as an Apple network disk, but what about as a file server for Windows machines. This is a bit tricky, because of mapping, but basically, if you set it up to. By the way a *big limitation is that the Time Capsule name must be…

MacBook Air SuperDrive jam
Hey watch out, I haven’t used the superdrive much, but when I left a DVD in there and on the airplane tried to play it, the DVD just grinded and stuck. I shook it like crazy, but it wasn’t till I got home that the drive seemed to actually start. Really recommend that you don’t…

Designing WiFi networks
Well, you don’t need a PhD to do this well, but it sure is easy to cause problems with Wifi. “Apple”:http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/Designing_AirPort_Networks_10.5-Windows.pdf has a good guide to the obvious pitfalls. The most important is that if you want several access points to work properly, you have to put them all on the same frequency and give…

Blocking Port 25 Prevents Sending Email
Well, here in Dallas, this happened again, another ISP (like Rogers two months ago) is blocking port 25 it looks like and also the SSL SMTP ports too. What a pain! Others have had like “blogd.com”:http://www.blogd.com/archives/002253.html have had this problem around it is one of the top 10 most read “discussions”:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=828731&tstart=1485 on apple forums, so…

Blackberry 8300 for Laptop Internet Connection
While it took me four days to get the iPhone working, getting the Blackberry to be an internet modem took just about 30 minutes. The instructions are superarcane and it is technically illegal as you need a data plan above the Blackberry plan. So either don’t surf too much or get the additional plan from…
